Russell studied graphic design at the University of Derby's College of Art and went on to work first as a scenic artist at Derby Playhouse and later as an illustrator at Hallmark, the greeting card company.

 

Whilst at Hallmark, Russell was occasionally tasked with producing 3D felt characters. Russell found that he had an aptitude for the medium and recognised a potential to develop the work further. Due to his lifelong passion for Ornithology, producing bird sculptures seemed like a natural progression.

Russell works from his home studio in Southeast Derbyshire.
