The Saint and the Unicorn - glicée print

The Saint and the Unicorn - glicée print

In this work a saint, dressed in earthy tones, is depicted gently cradling a young unicorn. Set against a woodland background, this artwork represents a desire to care for and protect the natural world.

The saint has his arm arm raised as a blessing,  a motive often used in Michelle's icons. The gesture of the hand was often used in Byzantine art to spell out the letters IC XC, the first and last letters of the Greek words Jesus (IHCOYC) Christ (XPICTOC).  The three raised fingers were also used to represent the Holy Trinity.
