Melbourne Castle
Michelle writes: "My many walks by the ruins of the old castle in Melbourne, Derbyshire sparked my imagination to make this piece of work. My research uncovered a few precious facts. The castle was built in the early 1300's on slightly raised ground towards the east of the town, with records of it having a chapel, gatehouse, great chamber, bakehouse, drawbridge, turrets an multi-angular towers. There are stories too of royal visits: of King John whilst on a hunting trip, and of Elizabeth I in her search for a place to imprison Mary Queen of Scots. A fanciful engraving survives, made in the 19th century from an earlier drawing of 1602. A wonderful starting point for me."
